There was little real surprise this week when former major league
baseball all star Mark McGwire admitted that he had used illegal
steroids at times during his baseball career.

The only real shock, as it were, was the timing of the announcement.

Anabolic steroids turn men into overly muscled freaks. That’s why
steroids are banned in professional sports. A roided-up player has
an unfair advantage over competitors who are playing by the rules.

The Catch 22 in all of this is that one of the more generally known
side effects of the use of anabolic steroids is a reduction in the
natural production of testosterone, shrinking of the male testes
and infertility.

That’s a combination most guys with any common sense would
actively avoid. Common sense must be in short supply in professional
athletics because higher echelon athletles have proven more than
willing to risk the unpleasant side effects of steroid use to get over
the hump and receive the fame, the glory, the money and the babes
that their new found athletic prowess might provide.

Let’s just hope for the sake of cheaters like Mark McGwire that
there aren’t additional penalties to come due at a date much later
in life, when the fame is long gone, the television cameras and
the reporters, and not a soul will care that their health is in decline
because of their desperate gamble with illegal performance
enhancing drugs.
